Lasse Hoile (Denmark) is a renowned photographer, filmdirector and cinematographer. Using mixed media and intertwining vintage style with a modern-day twist, Hoile is best known for his close collaborative work with musician Steven Wilson, whose projects include Porcupine Tree and Blackfield. Hoile works with several musicians like Anathema, Steve Rothery (Marillion), and Opeth. In this exhibition, Noorderlicht shows a selection of Lasse Hoile’s photographs, mixed media works, and collages in addition to the film Insurgentes - a documentary exploring the curiosity of an artist and his desire to travel the world in search of inspiration to create music. Influenced by melancholic music as well as Francis Bacon, David Lynch and Andrei Tarkovsky, Lasse Hoile taps into the human psyche. He creates stark depictions of reality that often convey a sense of emotional struggle. Faces are wrapped, hidden, obscured. Lone, distorted figures travel through a desolate landscape. Vintage-style erotica is given a shamanistic touch. Seduction and repulsion go hand in hand. Hoile’s cinematic language pulls the viewer in, and then cleverly leaves us to our own devices.

In our ‘Project Space’ we present Atelier Junn (NL): two photographers who are at their best when on a diet of analoge photography, damn good music and lots of experiments as part of their photographical design. Junn’s specialization in collodion photography derives from their many combined years in digital and analog photography after which they delved deeper into the world of handmade photography as a means to produce their photo’s in a more physically tangible and unique way. To apply this old- and often cumbersome technique might look like an odd choice knowing that to produce just one single photo on location can take a whole day. Still, the risk involved in this intricate process with all it’s handicaps is just what drives Junn to portray their favourite artists. As just like an artist’s performance, one can prepare by laying the foundation for a show but once on stage the execution of that performance all comes down to one single moment. The slow and complex aspects of the collodion process used in our otherwise fast and rushed way of life sometimes also becomes visible when the image emerges in the collodion photo in its fixing bath. This resulted in a visual ‘mixtape’ of portraits of musicians taken just before or right after the show.
